Just because it fits, doesn’t mean it should

We’ve all been there.

You’re loading the washer, arms full of clothes, and you think, “I can definitely fit one more thing in there.“

And technically, you’re right. It fits.

But should it?

The Washer Needs Room to Dance

Washing machines don’t clean clothes by sheer willpower; they are designed so that clothes can move freely inside the drum. Clothes need space to move, tumble, and rub against each other so soap and water can do their job. When a washer is packed tighter than a suitcase before vacation, everything just kind of… sits there. That tumbling motion is what lets waster and soap reach every inch of fabric.

The result?

• Clothes aren’t cleaned thoroughly
  • A tightly packed washer means water and detergent can’t reach all the surfaces to clean stains and dirt. Some items may come out less clean, or not clean at all.
• Soap doesn’t rinse out properly leaving a residue on clothes.
• Clothes can become tangled into a big knot.
  • This makes the spin cycle less effective leaving clothes wetter than they should be.
• Clothing takes a beating
  • Friction increases when garments rub too tightly together leading to pilling, stretching, tears, and fading.
• Laundry doesn’t smell fresh. Hello last week’s gym socks!

Overloading doesn’t just affect cleanliness; it can be rough on the machine too. Heavy, tightly packed loads puts extra strain on the washer. The motor has to work harder and may overheat. Parts such as bearings and belts wear out faster which can lead to costly repairs. The spin cycle may become imbalanced causing vibration and noise.

Laundry Loading Tips

If you have to push the clothes down to close the door, it’s too much!

A happy washer has:

• Clothes filled loosely in the drum.
• Leave a hand’s width of space at the top. About 2/3 full is the goal.
• Enough room for everything to tumble comfortably.

Think of it like a dance floor. Nobody wants to dance shoulder-to-shoulder with zero room to move!

So next time laundry day rolls around and you’re tempted to squeeze in “just one more thing” remember: your clothes need personal space too. Giving your clothes a little wiggle room means they come out cleaner, fresher, and ready to wear – without extra wear and tear on your favorite outfits or the machine. A smaller load now saves you time, hassle, and laundry regrets later.
