In December of 2018, we started a new adventure of becoming small business owners. Joe and Jackie Hilke and Jesse and Melissa Hansen purchased Lisa’s Laundry Land in Two Rivers on 14th Street.
In July of 2019, the name was changed to Big Loads. We made this welcoming laundromat our own and take pride in offering a clean and cozy place for community members and visitors to do their laundry.
Many improvements have been made to our laundromat in recent years. In 2019 we made a lot of smaller behind the scenes improvements such as installing a security camera system, updating the apartments, and adding vending machines.
In 2020 we installed four Speed Queen washers and added free wi-fi for our customers. To clarify, the Speed Queen machines are not considered washing machines – they are considered a washer extractor because they spin much faster than the average washer to extract extra water from your clothes resulting in less time needed in the dryer.
Our largest 80 pound Maytag washer was purchased and installed in 2021. At the time of installation, this was the largest washing machine in Manitowoc county and is by far our most popular machine. This washer can hold a lot of laundry and is a favorite for customers with large families. Installation was quite the adventure! We had to completely remove two side windows and rent equipment to send it through the window after partially disassembling the machine.
In 2022 our six smallest washers replaced with the most recent Maytag model. Our customers appreciate these smaller, low cost machines that clean clothes efficiently.
Our biggest changes occurred in 2023. Twelve dryers were replaced with brand new energy efficient models. We also installed PayRange as an alternative way to pay for our services. PayRange is an app based payment system allowing customers to pay for laundry with their phone and we offer the option to use PayRange with our in store kiosk for those who choose not to download the app.
We had brand new efficient hot water heaters installed in 2025 and also had our roof replaced.
Life offered Jesse and Melissa new and exciting opportunities and sold their share of Big Loads to the Hilkes. Joe and Jackie are excited to continue running and managing Big Loads with the same level of care and commitment for 2026.
